Just Try – When it comes to realizing dreams, Elvia Hernandez does not let much stand in her way. “Background doesn’t matter. Where a person comes from doesn’t matter,” she explains.
In 1987, as a single mom, she decided to leave the village of Morazan, Torola in war stricken El Salvador to seek a better life in Canada for her and her two children. Six years later, a friend presented to her and her new husband, Jesus Valle, the AMWAYTM business opportunity. They decided to pursue it.
“In the beginning, we were mainly focused on selling,” says Elvia. “And it was a struggle for us to get people involved in the business.” But all that changed after she read other IBOs stories and books written by Rich DeVos and Birdie Yager. “I felt motivated by their stories and felt that if they could do it, I could do it, too,” she says.
Elvia emphasizes that those books inspired the most significant change in her approach to the business. “The books talk about how to socialize and get connected to people, how to listen to them. I realized that business is more about helping people and becoming financially free,” explains Elvia. “The secret to live is to give.”
She has since touched the hearts of many people and sponsored several other IBOs, many of whom have achieved and continue to achieve great success. She always makes it a point to give her customers materials to educate them about becoming an IBO with Amway. “I don’t want to leave anyone out. I want everyone to have the same opportunity I had,” she shares.
A couple of years ago, Elvia left a doctor’s office knowing that a new challenge lay ahead for her, her business, and her family. “I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and had to undergo seven weeks of radiation therapy,” she says.
Having cancer did not deter her from following through with her business plans, however, and she continued to work – harder, in fact. “I would come home from radiation, put on my work clothes, and go out and present to people about becoming involved in Amway.”
In addition to radiation therapy, parts of Elvia’s thyroid were surgically removed. “I couldn’t speak for six months,” she says. “I thank God for NUTRILITE® products. They helped me to stay healthy and recuperate from my situation.” She is also thankful for her strong support system, including her friends at Amway, her husband, and her four children, who were there for her during her treatment, operation, and recovery.
This year, all of her hard work has paid off in attaining the level of Platinum.
“We have a saying in Spanish,” says Elvia. “My God, my health, and my happiness will help me to achieve my goals and dreams.”
