Founders Memorial Scholarship Program 2013
Leadership requires us to be mindful of the future, preparing the next generation. It also demands that we embrace the lessons learned from our experience and history.
In February of 2013, with an eye to our future and the next generation of leaders, Amway North America announced the establishment of an initiative created to help develop those leaders – the Founders Memorial Scholarship Program, in honor of our first Amway Independent Business Owners, Jere and Eileen Dutt, Fred and Bernice Hansen, and Joe and Helyne Victor.
These IBOs were pioneers. They were also visionaries, leaders, mentors, and friends. They played a unique role in our business and leave behind an amazing legacy, one that we see in each generation of new Amway leaders. Their names and leadership are legendary. Their influence, enormous. More than 50 years after they started their Amway businesses, we see the impact of their work and leadership in the lives of their families and of every IBO who embraces the Amway opportunity as a way to reach his or her own American dream.
In honor of their contributions, three scholarships were established – each in the amount of $5,000:
- the Jere and Eileen Dutt Memorial Scholarship,
- the Fred and Bernice Hansen Memorial Scholarship, and
- the Joe and Helyne Victor Memorial Scholarship
Each scholarship will be awarded annually, to IBOs and their children, as a lasting testament to our founding families… and a nod to the leaders of tomorrow.
And now, more good news!
- Earlier this summer, in an amazing gesture of partnership and generosity, the IBOAI and the families for whom the Scholarships are named – the Dutts, the Hansens, and the Victors – offered to match the monies Amway planned to contribute, raising the total of each scholarship to $15,000! A big thank you to the IBOAI Board, and to Jody and Gina Dutt, Karen and Jerry DeBlaay, Susan and Skip Ross, and Jody and Kathy Victor for their vision and support of this program.
- The response to this first year’s call for entries was tremendous. Nearly two hundred IBOs and their children shared their stories of leadership, each with a focus on Family, Freedom, Hope, or Reward. The independent judging panel was both amazed by the stories shared, and challenged by the task of selecting just three from among them.
The panel rose to the challenge and delivered the names of three young people, all IBOs, as the 2013 winners of the Founders Memorial Scholarships. We are proud to announce:
of Jersey City, New Jersey, as the recipient of the Jere and Eileen Dutt Memorial Scholarship. Fatumata (Fatima) is a sophomore at Rider University in New Jersey, majoring in business.
“This scholarship is just another testament of what Amway stands for. The Founders scholarship is a blessing to me and it shows me that Amway is committed to helping people in every aspect of their lives, not only through the business opportunity but also education.”
– Fatima Koroma
“Our hearts were touched by Fatumata’s story. The resilience she has shown in escaping her past and being able to still focus on a positive future is inspiring. And her goal of helping to change lives for the better should encourage us all. These ideals that are so prevalent in our business is why Amway continues to impact the world. It’s what Jere and Eileen believed in and shared with others. A person’s past should not control their future. We are happy to be able to help support Fatumata in the pursuit of her dreams!”
– The Dutt Family, G2 and G3
of Chicago, Illinois, as the recipient of the Fred and Bernice Hansen Memorial Scholarship. Marriyam is a senior at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, majoring in electrical engineering.
“I never thought something I did out of love for serving God’s creation would actually help me win a scholarship in the future! Amway truly is the BEST company I have done business with. Winning the scholarship makes me stretch once again and go out of my comfort zone to share this amazing opportunity one more time, go find that one person who’d be looking out for it, to come their way and change their life for the better. I started this business to pay off my student loans and my dreams and goals expanded from that point on. This is just the beginning; the best is yet to come.”
– Marriyam Qureshi
“Hope” has circumnavigated the world through the Amway Business. Marriyam saw hope in the eyes of those that had no hope when she began to develop her Amway Business and develop the potential of the people around her. The Hansen family is proud to celebrate this scholarship with Marriyam.
– The Hansen Family
of Hamilton, New Jersey, as the recipient of the Joe and Helyne Victor Memorial Scholarship. Kristina is a graduate student at King’s College, London, studying medicine.
“I am beyond honored to have won the scholarship named for Joe and Helyne Victor. This scholarship has relieved some of the financial burdens of my education and it has meant the world to share this with my parents… and that someone else sees my potential and believes in me the same way they have for the past 22 years.”
– Kristina Kelvy
The Founders Memorial Scholarship is an exciting tribute to those who gave of their time and energy so we may have a bright future as an IBO. Setting in place a scholarship reward for others who dare to dream with heart-driven vision is a fitting recognition of the Founding IBO’s unselfishness and their example of paying it forward.
