Positive Sprouts – Philadelphia Garden

Great weather + excited kids + energized staff + much appreciated, hard-working Amway Global IBOs = our first and very successful Boys & Girls Club, Positive Sprouts Garden Build in Philadelphia.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather for the first Positive Sprouts build – sunny, a light breeze, mid-70s. The many helpful hands made the hard work fly by. Coached by a team of helpful and patient Master Gardeners from Pennsylvania State, Boys and Girls Club members, their parents, Amway Global employees and our IBOs broke ground for the vegetable and flower beds. Everyone pitched in to cut sod, assemble the raised beds, wheelbarrow soil and amendments and, by day’s end, had planted, watered and mulched 6healthy vegetable gardens, an exotic flower area and brightened the grounds of the Club with colorful planters and a refreshed outdoor picnic area. The area was transformed! The kids were so excited and already beginning to talk about eating from the garden and how the produce would be part of their Club’s Thanksgiving dinner.

Because we had so many eager volunteers, we were also able to address a few of the Club’s other pressing needs. Teams of kids and adults (and our IBOs) waded into the job of giving both the boys’ and girls’ bathrooms functional and aesthetic facelifts – with paint, new mirrors and new hardware. Hard work, but much appreciated.

We would like to thank each of the IBOs, some of whom drove up to 90 miles (one way!) to give of their time for the Club. This could not have been completed without your help! We hope all of you visit the Club often throughout the summer to see how the gardens are doing!
