Tulio and Nelina Portal
From coal to Diamond – Tulio Portal often thanks God for “giving me this vehicle to do something I normally wouldn’t have been able to do in life. There’s no explaining the wonderful way in which the Amway™ business transforms you from a lump of coal into a Diamond!” he observes, reflecting on their next goal.
Before Amway, “Life was very monotonous” and had little room for anything but work. On the surface, it looked like they were living the American Dream, because “we had a business (Tulio owned a long-haul truck), a new house, and a new car,” explains Nelina, the general manager of a fast-food restaurant. “But nothing really belonged to us, since the bank owned it all.”
That “fake status” nearly kept their sponsors from offering them the Amway opportunity. “They thought we didn’t need the business and offered us product instead,” recalls Nelina, who dug for more information.
Is she ever glad she did!
“We love to eat together with our children (Nelina, 24; Anita, 23; and Tulio Jr., 21 – all IBOs) because we never had time before,” says Nelina. Thankfully, she’s been able to cut back from working six-and-a-half days at the restaurant per week to working part time. “Amway is my life and my future!” she exclaims.
While learning to take direction from his upline mentors was a challenge at first, Tulio loves that life now holds “a lot of possibilities and dreams.” Besides making sure their parents are never in need and their children are established in their professions, the Portals want to establish an orphanage in their homeland of Peru.
One way they’ve already given back is by building Habitat for Humanity® homes in Guatemala. “I’d also like to adopt one or more children,” Nelina shares.
“Amway doesn’t give you just a business, but the opportunity to help others,” Tulio states.
